Jelly fish. Les meduses. Not that I've actually seen any but I've met people who have. And I've seen people staring at them in the sea. They are, depending on who you speak to, brown and speckled, white and clear, the size of a fist, the size of a big marshmallow. Whatever, everyone agrees that they sting.
The water is warm. Today I played valleyball, which is knocking a white football back and forth in the sea with a 7 year old who misread 'volley'.

Valleyball would be hard to play in the Alps.
Jelly fish. When I was little, maybe 11? I don't remember, we went to the Atlantic coast somewhere (one of the Carolinas? I don't remember that either-- geesh, I have no memory). Mom warned us about the undertow and jelly fish. Probably if she had not said a word I'd have been fine, but while swimming close to shore I was convinced I'd been caught in an undertow, then surrounded by jelly fish. I was right about the jelly fish. I ran screaming from the water convinced I was dying. Fascinating creatures they are, and so beautiful. I'd forgotten all about my jelly fish encounter. Thanks for bringing it back for me. =)
When I was a kid in Southern California, I was scared to death of jellyfish. And yes, they do sting.
That said, they're REALLY beautiful when you're SCUBA diving (and can actually see them and stay out of their way ... which I couldn't do so much frolicking in the waves as a would-be pre-teen body surfer).
Parents seem to do a lot of that to kids - warning them about terrible tragedies that had never even entered their heads until that moment and subsequently paralysing them with fear!
But maybe you have to to keep the little tykes under control...
Fear is such an easier control mechanism than rationale thought (or love ... then again, love isn't controlling, is it? I guess that depends on the relationship, but I digress).
Anyway, lol, fear works really well for the Republicans and FoxNews, so why not for parenting? ;-)
